In Unit 3 students select a musical work from a set list, which becomes the basis for a Focus Area. Students then explore the characteristics, context and performance practices relevant to their chosen Focus Area. Students will investigate their Focus Area, arrange or compose works and exercise based the findings of their investigation and then perform pieces (including their own) that are characteristic of their Focus Area.
In Unit 4 students continue their investigation from Unit 3, further exploring their chosen Focus Area by developing program notes to accompany their end-of-year performance repertoire and performing their own composition, arrangement or improvisation.

Music courses: Diploma of Music, Bachelor of Music Careers: Teaching, music industry jobs (performance and composition), music therapy
Students should have been learning their chosen instrument for several years before starting Music Performance or Music Investigation.
Private instrumental tuition is required for students undertaking Music Performance or Music Investigation. This can be arranged through the school at no cost or through an external instrumental teacher in consultation with the classroom teacher. Tuition from an external instrumental teacher will have a cost, which will vary depending on teacher rates.
