The Course:

This course is the beginning of future career. You will use professional software to create your own customised designs that you will fabricate with the schools very own 3D printers. Basic electrical theory and concepts will be taught through practical applications/simulations. You will have access to micro-controllers and learn some basic programming skills to control your own circuits. This is the start of automation where there is no limit to what you can create. You will gain skills in metal fabrication, including how to solder and strip wire to build LED Ferris wheel and electronic doorbell to name a few. The course has a practical and theory component. This course is the beginning to building your own remotely controlled quad-copter, home security system, Bluetooth or wireless controlled car, the options are endless. 

This unit will focus on...

  • Understand electrical circuits
  • Learning how to test electrical components (fault finding)
  • Learning Computer Aided Design (CAD) software
  • Working with 3D printers to make custom designs
  • Learning basic metal fabrication
  • Learning the computer language C++ to control an electrical circuit (start of automation)
  • Understanding different components
  • Reading electrical diagrams
  • Safely using equipment

  • Electrical circuits basics
  • Voltage testing of components (Oscilloscope)
  • LED projects
  • Soldering
  • Wire Stripping
  • Metal fabrication basics (giullotine, folder, pedestal drill)
  • 3D CAD design
  • 3D printing
  • Ferris wheel (with LED lighting display)
  • Build Electronic doorbell
  • Programming of micro-controller (Arduino)

These units lead to

  • Year 10 electronics
  • Electrician (Specifically Programmable Logic Control)
  • University studies in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
  • TAFE studies in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
  • VCE Systems Engineering Units 1 - 4

Special considerations

Completing the 8/9 Electronics will give you a great lead into year 10 electronics. It will provide you with an understanding of some core knowledge and skills. It is not compulsory to have completed 8/9 electronics to access year 10 electronics.

Costs involved

$50 for the purchase of electronic components, metal products, 3D printing supplies and the safety package.
