The Course:

Introduction to Software development aims to introduce students to the world of game-making. Students will investigate, design, produce and evaluate their own game. The platform for building their game will be GameMaker. This is a software that has a freeware licence and can be used on an individual netbook or a home computer. Throughout the process students will learn fundamental coding principles that are transferrable to many progamming languages. All elements of the game will be created such as backgrounds/maps, characters and features.

Networks and the various types of hardware that exist in these networks is a core theory component of the subject. Students will learn the about the hardware and the specific use of these hardware. This encompasses wired, wireless and mobile networks.

This unit will focus on...

  • To create a game with GameMaker following the PSM process.
  • To learn about different Networks 

Learning and Assessment Activities

  • Create a personalised game using GameMaker
  • Create custom sprites (game characters)
  • Understand the Problem Solving Methodology (PSM)
  • Network hardware research
  • Network connections (how hardware is connected together)
  • Explore various networks (wired, mobile, wireless)

  • Computer programming (various languages)
  • Phone App development
  • Web designer
  • Game designer/maker
  • Various other Information Technology industries

Special considerations

Completing the 8/9 Software Development will give you a great lead into year 10 Computer Programming or App Design. It will provide you with an understanding of some core knowledge and skills. It is not compulsory to have completed 8/9 Software Development to access any of year 10 IT subjects.
