In the Drouin Secondary College Middle School, an elective system operates. Students study a combination of Core and Elective units. Unit descriptions and information on the pathways they allow appear in the relevant Key Learning Domain section of this site. These links can be found at the bottom of each page, or on the Pathways & Unit Descriptions page.
Please note that course descriptions will open in a separate window or tab, once you have finished reading the descriptor, close the window/tab.
Year 9 students are required to complete two sequential units of English and Maths. Students will be advised through the course selection process of the appropriate level that they willbe enrolled in based on ability and teacher recommendation. These options are:
- Year 9 English Communication OR Year 9 English OR Year 9 Advanced English
- Year 9 Standard Maths OR Year 9 Advanced Maths
Students must also study the core units *:
Students then choose one from each of the Year 8/9 Elective offerings from The Arts, Health & PE and Technology. Students then choose any two further Units from the Year 8/9 Elective offerings, or the additional electives below that are available only to year 9 students.
- Agricultural Studies
- Childhood and Adolescent Studies
- Duke of Edinburgh
- Forensic Science
Or, Students can use these additional Two units to take up any Early Access offers of interest. (Early Access at year 9 is by Key Learning Domain invitation; students are invited individually based on previous performance and teacher recommendation).
Students can also study Instrumental Music as an extracurricular subject.
Trade Pathways Program students study an altered program of units, but will select some electives.
A special Lifeskills unit is on offer to our high needs students that may replace another unit of study. Speak to the Integration Coordinator about access to this.
*If students accept offers and succeed in Year 9 Core units as Early Access units in Year 8, they are not required to take them again in Year 9. They would normally take the Year 10 subject in the sequence in Year 9, or use the free unit as an extra elective.
