# 11 VCE Specialist Mathematics (11MSM1)

#### The Course

Unit 1 and 2 VCE Specialist Mathematics provide a course of study for students who wish to undertake an in-depth study of mathematics, with an emphasis on concepts, skills and processes related to mathematical structure, modelling, problem solving and reasoning. This study has a focus on interest in the discipline of mathematics in its own right and investigation of a broad range of applications, as well as development of a sound background for further studies in mathematics and mathematics related fields.

• Complex Numbers

• Linear and Non-Linear Coordinate Geometry

#### Unit 2 Topics

• Calculus

• Vectors

• Mechanics

#### Learning and Assessment Activities

Students will be exposed to similar assessment methods as used in Specialist Maths Units 3 & 4. These include tests based around the areas of study, application tasks to test the student’s ability to apply mathematical knowledge in different contexts and well as examinations.

#### These units lead to

Higher Education degrees in;
Engineering, Medicine, Science, Computer Science, Programming and Accounting.

#### Special considerations

Before undertaking Pre-Specialist Mathematics, you should have satisfactorily completed year 10 Methods.
