The Course:

What makes a good photograph? In this unit students will investigate the design elements, principles and compositional conventions to create an individual folio of photographic imagery. A range of both traditional and contemporary technologies will be explored, such as darkroom processing and digital image manipulation using editing software. Students will process their own films, contact prints, test strips and black and white photographs. Consecutively a digital folio will also be developed utilizing various tools, filters and layers. Students will reflect on the processes undertaken and the finished folio pieces through self evaluation. Students will examine the work of photographers from different cultures and periods, analyzing different interpretive approaches to subject matter. An investigation will also be undertaken of the significant technological developments that have occurred in photography throughout history.
