Choosing subjects and pathways to your future can be a daunting task. Here is a starting guide to what you should consider in your planning and what you should not.


  • Read this Course Selection Guide thoroughly
  • Consider other available Programs
  • Seek advice from parents, teachers and Careers Pathways Advisors
  • Consider the recommendations made to you about subject choice by your teachers
  • Talk to people who work in the fields that interest you
  • Know the requirements of courses at TAFE, University, the Defence Forces and other Tertiary Institutions you wish to apply for after school
  • Phone Tertiary Institutions or Employer groups in your area of interest to gather information
  • Choose subjects you like
  • Choose subjects you are good at
  • Attend Tertiary Institution Open Days
  • Choose subjects that will help you with your future career
  • Use the DSC Careers website
  • Choose subjects that will keep your options open for possible career choices


  • Don't choose subjects because your friends are choosing them
  • Don't choose your subjects because of which teacher you think might be teaching it
  • Don't choose subjects because you think they will be easy
  • Don't leave thinking about your future to someone else
